Letter from House Corporation President Dirk Greene

September 29 2008--

Dear Alpha Gamma Alumni:

Lots of great things have been happening at the house both organizationally and physically. The active chapter continues to build membership in raw numbers and in men of good character. With alumni brother, Tim Michael ’70 acting as recruitment advisor we are confident 2008-2009 will be a banner year for activating new ambitious Sigma Chi’s.

As many of you know, our beloved house at 260 East 15th Avenue is now 53 years old and is in need of serious attention. House Corporation is completing a major renovation project including replacement of the patio deck that was leaking into the chapter room; repairing the parking lot; new security lighting; new 800 amp electric service; many other miscellaneous odds and ends; and most importantly the complete renovation of the “old” chapter room into a new state of the art study room. Big thanks to Brother Jim Smiley ‘76 for his management of this project.

I and the entire Board of Trustees of the House Corporation would like to encourage all who are available to consider attending the Home coming dinner this October 24th (it’s co-ed this year…. Please bring your significant others). And even if you are not lucky enough to make it to the dinner, we would encourage a visit to the house to see for yourself, what is happening at 260!

In Hoc Signo Vinces,

Dirk Greene ‘95

COLLEGE - Robinson graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University in 1984 with a bachelors degree in Honors Accounting after working as an Accounting Intern for both Lancaster Colony and Deloitte Haskins & Sells, and as a Marketing Intern for the City of Columbus. During college he earned income for living expenses by running a small handyman business, applying skills learned in the hardware store. Robinson joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity as a freshman and was elected chapter president for his senior year.

“I learned many lessons during these years, both in books and from life itself. The former I recall with effort, but the latter I can never forget.”

2008 Fall Undergrad Rush Info

http://osusigmachi.com/rush.htm

How the Process Works

The Ohio State University designates a recruitment, or "rush," period designed to help potential new members learn more about the Greek organizations on our campus. At Ohio State, formal rush occurs during the first two weeks of Winter Quarter and informal rush occurs in the Spring and Fall Quarters, however interested individuals are free to visit Greek houses as they wish. Sigma Chi at Ohio State encourages individuals interested in rushing our fraternity to visit the house and meet the Active Chapter. Should you decide to rush Sigma Chi, the chapter will provide you with the necessary information and registration forms. Check the Recruitment Calendar for a list of upcoming events. In addition, feel free to contact the Recruitment Chairmen at any time to set up a tour of the Chapter House or meet some of the Active Brothers.

During Recruitment, talk with the members of every Greek organization OSU has to offer in order to find out which is right for you. If both you and the Sigma Chi Brothers feel that Sigma Chi is the fraternity for you, you will be extended a "bid," or invitation to join.

If you accept your bid, you will enroll in a pledge, or educational program. The pledge program is designed to teach you more about Sigma Chi, as well as allow the Active Chapter to learn more about you. The process of pledgeship consists of intellectual exercises, shared experiences, and cultivation of friendship of a higher ordeal - all aimed at enlisting worthy men into a meaningful commitment of lifelong duration. The program is designed to be mentally, emotionally, and spiritually stimulating, and therefore HAZING AND DEGRADING ACTIVITIES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

The pledge period culminates with initiation, your first introduction into the teachings of our Ritual and the beginning of your journey as a Sigma Chi Brother. After initiation, you will receive post-initiation training (P.I.T.), a program designed to help you learn more about our ideals and ritual, and prepare you to make the most out of your undergraduate Sigma Chi experience.

Why Join a Fraternity?

Joining a fraternity can by one of the most rewarding decisions you will make in your college career. In addition to enriching your academic, social and extracurricular life at Ohio State, Sigma Chi is an excellent place to meet individuals of different talents and convictions, who share similar values and ideals as you. Being a member of a fraternity can help build your character in every aspect, an invaluable experience that will help you throughout life, whether applying for a job, graduate school, or moving to a new city, state or country.

Dean Fronk 93 - Update

From Brad Allen 93-
I hope this e-mail finds you well. FYI......Dean Fronk just got out of his one year anniversary doctors appointment and there is absolutely no new growth of his tumor. The doctors said that this is the best case scenario......needless to say Dean and family are ecstatic!

David Zadnik's (89) Carsonies celebrates 20 years!!

I caught this in the paper 8/12/08 Columbus Dispatch.
Free stromboli
David Zadnik (1989) and his wife, Christy, have decided that free food would be a good way to get people to help celebrate the 20th birthday of their Carsonie’s Italian Restaurant, at 6000 Westerville Rd. in Westerville.
So on Saturday, they’ll be giving away individual strombolis. Because the give-away is for dine-in customers only, it might help to know that the store seats 100 indoors and about 80 on the patio and is open from noon until 11 p.m.
“We’ll probably be making dough all day long,” Zadnik said, “but we figure it’s worth thanking people for helping us flourish for such a long time.”
If the restaurant runs out, Zadnik said, he’ll start handing out coupons.
Carsonie’s also will have live bands, a bocce tournament and door prizes.

Flashing Clock CD Review - Mike Sperry 91 & Pete Volker 93

Mike Sperry 91 & Pete Volker 93 have a band named Flashing Clock. They have been playing in Columbus for the past 2 years, recently played Comfest 08, and just released a CD, see the review below. They feature some creative song titles; Robbed In Linden, Knife Fight & Never Worse.

From Columbus Alive August 7, 2008.
The Flashing Clock

"Hot Brown"

Web: myspace.com/theflashingclock

When Dan Spurgeon isn't busy with Bush League All-Stars, the former Greenhorn mastermind plays in this ludicrously entertaining combo. It's a shame they don't play out more often because the Flashing Clock has tapped into something splendid with this new CD. Hot Brown sounds like Mudhoney playing would-be classic rock standards, covered in sludge and bursting with melody. There's no gimmick to buy into, it's just a great record.

65th Grand Chapter Info- Letter from Grand Consul

Brothers and friends,

Every two years the Fraternity hosts its premier event, Grand Chapter, which is our principal legislative and electoral affair. In 2009, we will meet at the historic Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, S.C., in an effort to have a "Quintessentially Southern Grand Chapter." The hotel is named after Revolutionary War hero General Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion, who was among the first to use what we now recognize as modern guerilla tactics. (Interestingly, Mel Gibson portrayed a character based on Marion in the movie The Patriot, which was partially shot in Charleston.)

We have chosen to hold Grand Chapter at a hotel that is financially reasonable AND where we can take over the entire facility so we are not competing with other groups for facilities. We are also providing a second tier list of alternative hotels that are within walking distance of the Francis Marion. In recognition of the prior expressions of the members of the Grand Council to reduce the personal costs of the event, we have done two things:

First, we have scheduled the event over the July 4 weekend, which will allow brothers to center their family holiday time around this occasion. We have deliberately selected a family-oriented location for Grand Chapter, so that we may encourage family participation. With venues for ALL ages, the Charleston area provides an ideal opportunity to combine Sig business with family pleasure. This weekend choice allows us to save significantly on hotel costs.

We fully realize that the selection of this weekend will not suit everyone, but we also hear the Grand Council's desire to economize. We have already heard from some of you that it is a brilliant idea, and from others that it is the end of civilization. Oh well, as I am fond of saying, “Put three Sigs in a room and you are assured of at least five opinions!”

Second, we have shortened the event by one day, returning to the schedules more similar to those of the late 1990s. The Executive Committee and various other boards will meet on Thursday, July 2, and the welcoming reception will be on that evening. The first business session will start on Friday morning, and the final event will find us celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks and our families on Saturday night at the South Carolina Aquarium.

We will showcase numerous parallel activities for sweethearts and families, from plantation visitations to excursions to nearby museums and historic attractions, such as: Fort Sumter (where the Civil War began), CSS HL Hunley (the first submarine to successfully sink a ship in combat), the USS Yorktown carrier (used by the Navy during World War II), and the Old Exchange Provost Dungeon, which was constructed from 1771-1772 (and where George Washington ACTUALLY stayed, REALLY!). Then there is the perennially favorite family location, Myrtle Beach, which is only 100 miles north of Charleston, as well as the local Folly Beach.

By reducing your time away from work, selecting a discounted weekend, and concentrating Grand Chapter on business — while mixing in pleasure and family fun — we are doing our best to make Charleston an attractive venue for all members.

Please make your travel plans accordingly. We hope to have reservation up on the Grand Chapter Web site on Nov. 1. Here are a number of Web links for your perusal:

David Holzer 82

An update from David Holzer 82
I became involved with The Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition (TAASC) as a result of my son's Eagle Scout project. I attended an organizational meeting with him, met the Board of Directors and several of the participants and I was hooked. As an avid kayaker and skier it was a natural fit.

That was 4 years ago. I now average just over 400 volunteer hours per year.
I am now a Board Member as well as a volunteer.

My roles are as follows:
Co-Director of the Kayak program
Certified ACA (American Canoe Assoc.) Kayak instructor
Certified PSIA (Pro. Ski Instructor of America)
Speaker / Presenter (Kiwanis & Rotary Clubs...)
Grant writer

I am also in charge of what is known as the Jeffrey Property. This is a 30 acre site on the Oshaughnesy (sp?) Reservoir owned by the City of Columbus. We have a lease on approximately 8 acres that includes a 2 car garage and house. The two structures were close to falling down, through my efforts and several very generous companies we have new roofs, new windows, new siding and commitments to complete the interior of the house from electricians, plumbers, HVAC, floor covering... Having a major issue with various authorities on sanitary/septic issues and have nearly 2 years on working this project through, City of Columbus, Delaware County, Ohio EPA and a few other jurisdictions.
If any Brother wants to learn more have them give me a call at 614-451-5100 or email me at dholzer@c1realty.com.

Attention Sigma Chi Lawyers, Judges, and Law Students

Name: Jeff Madison
From: Columbus
E-mail: jeffreyjmadison@yahoo.com Attention Sigma Chi Lawyers, Judges, and Law Students.

Through the Sigma Chi Friendship Circle message board several attorneys including myself have begun the process to establish a nationwide Sigma Chi Bar Association. We are currently trying to gather contact information to put together a directory. Should you want to participate please email your contact information to: Kurt Gerstner at kgerstner@campbell-trial-lawyers.com

More details are below:

Hello Brothers - So far I have about 20 names with contact info and short bio info in the Sig bar association directory. I'm going to send that out to the brothers who are in the directory and I will update it and send out updated directories to the people in it every few months. If you have not already posted your name, contact info and a short bio on Friedship Circle or sent me an email with your info, but would like to be included in the directory, then please get me the info.

I envision us being able to use this directory as a resource. If you have a question about Illinois law on a particular subject you can look up a Sig lawyer there to get some info. If you have a case in California and you need local counsel you can look at the directory and find a Sig to hire as your local counsel. If you need to take a deposition in Florida you can find a Sig lawyer and ask to use his conference room and to get you a stenographer. Obviously the more names we have in it the better the resource it will be.

Once we get enough of a core group involved we can also talk more seriously about getting together as a group annually for some CLE, business networking and sharing the bonds.

Please pass the word to other Sig lawyers who might want to be added to the directory and urge them to send me their names, contact info and bios as well. Thanks.

In Hoc,
Kurt
